NOTE-READING

  • Play Note Rush. This is my #1 favorite right now!
  • Play Flash Class app for iPhones & iPad (in iPhone mode)
  • Play Piano Notes app for iPhones & iPad
  • Practice individual flash cards (white)
  • Practice Interval flash cards (colorful)
  • Learn landmarks first
  • Practice all C's one week; all D's the next, etc.
  • Play TONS of easy (easier than your performance-level) music
  • Note Spellers (John W. Schaum, Faber & Faber's "I Can Read Music")
  • Play games with pennies (candies, plastic "notes," etc.) on a laminated/over-sized staff
  • Circle landmarks in the music with a colored pencil
  • Circle two notes that are a skip (3rd) apart
  • Before you play through a piece, look for patterns.
  • Find computer games
  • Use the slider note like flash cards. (This can be purchased at a music store. It has a black, plastic note that can be rolled up & down the grand staff.)

SIGHT-READING SKILLS

  • Choose a slow tempo and try to play as many notes as possible.
  • Choose a faster/lively tempo. Don't stop, no matter what! Let notes fall over the floor, but keep going!
  • Choose a hand (RH? LH?) that will keep playing, even if one hand has to drop out.
  • Find lots of music that's at your skill level or easier, and play through as much as possible.
  • Play all the pieces composed by one composer to get a feel for their style.
  • See soundswell.co.uk for 67 progressively more challenging sight-reading exercises.

NOTE-READING APPS FOR iPHONES AND iPADS

FREE:

  • Note Squish (Very cute! It's like Whack-a-Mole. You can only practice one clef at a time. )
  • Let's Read Music HD LITE by Let's Read Music Team
  • Music Tutor (Sight Reading Improver) by JSplash
  • Master in a Minute--Music Note Trainer

FOR A SMALL COST:

  • *****Flash Class app (for iPad in iPhone mode)--the best app I've found so far! This drills the letter names of the notes. You can add "decks" of notes to drill, depending on what you need the most practice on.
  • ****Piano Notes Fun app. I love this one because it drills the notes on the staff and where they are on the keyboard. You can make the keyboard & music colorful or plain.)
  • *****Tenuto. This app can drill just about anything you might ever want to drill--notes, intervals, keyboard, and even guitar frets. The only thing that I don't love about this app is that it just isn't as fun as some of the others, and it doesn't have specific challenges or levels that you move through; it's just tons of drill, but players do earn scores.
  • *****ReadRhythm app is the best app I've found for rhythm! It has 17 progressive levels just in 4/4 time signature, as well as nine other time signatures!!! The only downside about this app is that on the iPad, you only drill 2 measures over & over til you manually move forward to the next measure; on the iPhone, you only drill 1 measure until you have to push play again to move forward to the next measure of rhythm. I wish there was a way to have line after line after line of rhythm without stopping after every (or every other) measure!
  • Rhythm Cat app is a fun app for drilling rhythm. Students hear a fun melody or instrumental background while they tap the rhythm.
  • NoteTrainer app also is a great app for note reading and connecting the notes on the staff to the keyboard. The notes slide across the screen from right to left. You get a score.
  • mpt Note Speller by Supply Street
  • Blue Note Music Flash Cards by Blue Note Software
  • Music Reading Essentials by Apricot Digital Publishing
  • Music Note Trainer by Dev4Phone
  • *****FrozenApeTempo app is my favorite metronome app!
